  3. Dude i’m an amateur so sorry to bother u with basic questions but my sd card has DCIM, MISC, SNDR, folders: which is the root folder?

  4. When you “explore” your sd card with windows explorer, just drag the firmware into it.

    say D:\ is your sd card, root is the D:\

  5. two questions:

    1) there is pre14-xxxx.zip and allbest-xxx.zip which one is it? what does the other one do?

    2) does anybody besides the writer of this blog tried the hack?

  6. hello andres, judging from the date released, i presume that allbest seems to be the latest stable released build. I’ve updated the link to point directly to direct download page for the CHDK firmware(allbest version). Second question, none that i personally know of, but if u scour around the photography forums like dpreview for instance, there are quite a number of ppl who have tried it.

  7. The raw format allows us to store in .crw .cr2 .wav .jpg .thm
    2 questions
    1) When i try using the .cr2 or .crw format and open the file using irfanview it says it can’t read header file. Unknown file format or file not found(though the software supports .crw/.cr2). Why so? Which software should i use?
    2) When i use the .jpg format the image is in less than 1mb big. So why does the screen still indicate that Shooting is in RAW mode?

  8. Hi ambardeep,

    1) you have to convert the CRW, CR2 from the camera to DNG first using “DNG for Powershot” software. Then you will need to download additional plugin for irfanview to view those DNG files. I use Photoshop CS2 or Lightroom to edit those files.

    2) When there is an indicator that shows “RAW” on the screen you are shooting in RAW + jpeg mode. To turn off RAW, you have go to the firmware menu and uncheck the “Save RAW” option.

  11. I often get E16 error on my S3IS. How do I get it right? Sometimes I keep on switching off and on before it gets ok again.

  12. Hi puia,

    I assume you are using the latest version of the firmware. The last time it happen to me, I just shut off the camera first. If it hangs, just take out the battery. then unlock the SD card .. and switch on the camera to allow it to startup without the firmware loaded. After that lock the card again.

    So far, I have only encountered the E16 twice. Once when the firmware was still in it’s infancy stage and another was about 2 years ago.

  13. Thanks unclelim. But what I wanted to ask u is, I don’t use the firmware at all. I’m just a beginner user. My S3 often shows E16 error. When that happens the camera can’t start-up. The lens comes out but it hangs, though pictures already taken can be viewed.

    I can’t help u much on this matter but I suggest you send your camera to your local canon service center for repairs. It should be free if your camera is under warranty or for a small fees if it’s out of warranty.
